Bigs with Badges—also known as Bigs in Blue—is a statewide initiative from Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across Florida that connects youth with trusted mentors who serve as law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, military personnel, and other first responders. The program is designed to build strong, positive relationships between young people and the trusted professionals who serve their communities every day.
Why Mentoring Matters for Public Safety and Youth Development
Mentoring helps young people develop confidence, resilience, and better decision-making skills. Youth benefit from consistent support, especially when mentors offer both guidance and accountability. Bigs with Badges provides a structure for trusted adults to invest in the next generation through meaningful, one-to-one relationships that support long-term growth and connection.
Strengthening Community Trust and Youth Engagement through First Responder Mentoring
Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across Florida track outcomes related to youth perceptions of law enforcement, feelings of safety, and sense of community trust. More than 60 law enforcement and first responder organizations partner with us to support these efforts. Through Bigs in Blue and Bigs with Badges, youth are matched with police officers, firefighters, active military members, and veterans who serve as consistent mentors and role models. These relationships help youth build conflict resolution skills, strengthen civic engagement, and develop a greater sense of belonging. Participating youth report increased trust in public safety professionals and stronger connections within their communities.
The Role of First Responders in Mentoring
First responders are trained to lead, stay calm under pressure, and communicate clearly. These qualities make them strong mentors. Their involvement in Bigs with Badges helps youth see first responders as approachable and reliable adults who care about their future. As trust grows between the mentor and mentee, young people become more open to learning, goal-setting, and engaging in their communities.
Who Can Become a Big with a Badge?
The Bigs with Badges program welcomes a wide range of professionals, including:
- Police officers and sheriff’s deputies
- Firefighters and emergency medical technicians
- Paramedics and search and rescue workers
- Members of the Florida National Guard and military veterans
- Department of Corrections staff
- Officers from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission

Mentoring can take place in schools, community centers, or first responder offices. Each local BBBS agency adapts the program to fit the mentor’s availability and the needs of the youth.
Benefits for the Community
Bigs with Badges strengthens the connection between public safety professionals and local families. When youth and first responders develop meaningful relationships, it improves community trust and cooperation. This mentoring model also helps first responders give back in a direct and personal way that supports long-term community safety and wellbeing.
Statewide Support for Bigs with Badges
This program is supported by the Florida Office of the Attorney General, which helps fund and expand access to mentoring across the state. With strong partnerships and a shared focus on prevention, Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies are helping more youth build confidence and stronger futures.
